
What Is a LiFePO4 Battery and How Does It Work?
A LiFePO4 battery is a lithium chemistry that uses lithium iron phosphate for the cathode. It stores less energy per kilogram than NMC, but it is far more thermally stable, which is the main reason it dominates residential solar storage.

A single LiFePO4 cell is 3.2V nominal, so packs appear as 12.8V (4 cells), 25.6V (8 cells) and 51.2V (16 cells). A pack sold as "48V" is really 51.2V nominal, and that match is what makes it compatible with 48V inverters.
Every finished LiFePO4 pack includes a BMS that protects against overcharge, deep discharge and overheating, and balances the cells. Rated cycle life is typically 3,000-6,000 cycles at 80-90% depth of discharge, several times longer than gel.
In practice, usable energy from a LiFePO4 pack is close to its nameplate capacity, while a gel bank is normally sized around 50% depth of discharge to protect its life.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing amp-hours only and ignoring voltage, ending up with four times less energy than needed
- Discharging lead acid below 50%, which cuts life to less than half
- Picking a bank that does not match the inverter voltage, so charging fails or runs inefficiently
- Thin cable or a long run between bank and inverter, causing voltage drop and lost power
- Mixing new and old packs, or different capacities, on the same bus
