Lithium vs Gel Solar Batteries

First difference: usable capacity. Gel is normally sized to 50% depth of discharge, LiFePO4 to 80-90%. A 12V 200Ah gel battery therefore yields roughly 1.2kWh usable versus about 2kWh from a lithium pack with the same numbers.

Second: cycle life. Gel typically delivers 400-1,200 cycles depending on depth of discharge and heat, lithium 3,000 and up, which is why lithium's long-run cost per kWh is lower despite the higher sticker price.

Third: weight and size. A 15kWh lithium bank is far lighter and smaller than an equivalent gel bank, which matters in apartments, caravans and tight rooftops.

Gel still makes sense when upfront budget is the binding constraint, or when the system is rare backup rather than daily cycling.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing amp-hours only and ignoring voltage, ending up with four times less energy than needed
  • Discharging lead acid below 50%, which cuts life to less than half
  • Picking a bank that does not match the inverter voltage, so charging fails or runs inefficiently
  • Thin cable or a long run between bank and inverter, causing voltage drop and lost power
  • Mixing new and old packs, or different capacities, on the same bus

Send your load list and required hours over WhatsApp, or use the on-site system calculator to size the battery bank and array.

Technical advice is free, and the recommendation is based on your real consumption, inverter voltage and installation location rather than on the largest battery in stock.

Frequently asked questions

Which is actually cheaper?

Gel in the short term; over five years or more lithium usually wins because real cost per delivered kWh is lower.

Can I mix both in one bank?

No. Different charge curves and voltages damage the weaker units and shorten the whole bank's life.
