Choosing a Battery That Matches Your Inverter

First requirement is voltage: a 48V inverter needs a 48V/51.2V bank and will not run on 24V or 12V.

Second is battery type in the inverter settings: it must support the lithium (or gel) charge profile, with charge and cut-off voltages set from the battery datasheet.

Third is current: the battery's maximum charge current must be at least what the inverter delivers, and its maximum discharge current must cover your peak load.

Fourth is communication: some hybrid inverters read battery state over CAN or RS485, which improves charge accuracy and prevents abrupt cut-offs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing amp-hours only and ignoring voltage, ending up with four times less energy than needed
  • Discharging lead acid below 50%, which cuts life to less than half
  • Picking a bank that does not match the inverter voltage, so charging fails or runs inefficiently
  • Thin cable or a long run between bank and inverter, causing voltage drop and lost power
  • Mixing new and old packs, or different capacities, on the same bus
